1.2.1 FEMA

1.2.1 FEMA

To understand overall dam safety issue, we should know who FEMA is and what FEMA do firstly. The primary mission of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the Nation from all hazards, including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters, by leading and supporting the Nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation.

In terms of dam safety area, FEMA has been working to protect Americans from dam failure through the National Dam Safety Program (NDSP). The NDSP provides information about dam safety research and training.
The Interagency Committee on Dam Safety has prepared and approved the following federal guidelines for federal agency dam owners and regulators. The guidelines may also be used by non-federal dam owners, regulators, and operators. You can download with Acrobat Reader or move unto the FEMA website on this page.

· Emergency Action Planning for Dam Owners (FEMA 64)
· Earthquake Analyses and Design of Dams (FEMA 65)
· Federal Guidelines for Dam Safety (FEMA 93)
· Selecting and Accommodating Inflow Design Floods for Dams (FEMA 94)
· Glossary of Terms (FEMA 148)
· Hazard Potential Classification System for Dams (FEMA 333)
